St Teresa's Catholic Primary School and Nursery 3-11
from smallest to greatest
At St Teresa's we follow the Read Write Inc. programme for phonics. Read Write Inc. Phonics gives children a flying start in learning to read and write regardless of their background or need.
With Read Write Inc. Phonics all children:
Below you will see all of the sounds the children learn as part of their phonics sessions.
At St Teresa's Nursery begin to tune into hearing sounds around them, sing lots of nursery rhymes, looking at rhymes and patterns and look at the single sounds.
Reception cover Set 1, Set 1 Special Friends and Set 2.
Year 1 continue with Set 2 and learn Set 3. By the end of Year 1 they will know all of the sounds we teach. The children at the end of Year 1 complete a phonics screening check.
Year 2 continue to embed Set 3 and then move to spelling patterns, comprehension questions, alternative sounds and developing their confidence with reading more fluently.
You will notice each sound has a rhyme to help children remember the sound and to help them form the letters correctly. This starts from Reception onwards.
These can be used at home to help practice sounds by spelling and writing them (grapheme) and saying or hearing them (phoneme).
